Gael Garcia Bernal to star as Zorro in reboot

Back in February it was revealed that the long-gestating Zorro reboot Zorro Reborn had been dragged out of development hell, with Jonas Cuaron (Gravity) writing and directing the project, now titled Z.

Well, it seems that Cuaron has found an actor to portray the swashbuckling pulp hero, with Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries, Mozart in the Jungle) signing on for the lead role in the project. Garcia Bernal is coming off a recent collaboration with Cuaron, having starred in Desierto, which is set for release this year.

“I have always loved Gael for this role,” said Mark Amin, who is producing through his Sobini Films banner. “Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience.”

The new film will reimagine the legendary masked hero, and is set to take place in the near future.
