Michelle Williams in talks to play Janis Joplin in big screen biopic

Variety is reporting that Michelle Williams is in talks to portray the rock ‘n’ roll icon Janis Joplin in the biopic Joplin, which is being directed by Martha Marcy May Marlene helmer Sean Durkin.

The film is being produced by Peter Newman, who holds the rights to much of Joplin’s music catalogue and written materials. The project will reportedly explore the last six months of the musician’s life before her death of a drug overdose in 1970 aged just 27.

Williams will next be seen in Manchester by the Sea [read our review here], which opens in the States next month, and has seen her tipped for an Oscar nomination.
