The Week in Star Wars – Daisy Ridley on Rey’s parents and Mary Sue, new Rogue One image and more

October 30, 2016 by admin

The latest edition of The Week in Star Wars features comments from Daisy Ridley talking about her character’s parents and whether she’s a Mary Sue, a new image for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the film’s director ‘fanboying’ and more…

One of the big questions coming out of last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens is surrounded the parentage of Daisy Ridley’s Rey. People have theorised she is the offspring of Han and Leia, while others think she could be Luke’s child – there are even those who think Jyn Erso from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story could be her mother (because she’s British, I guess). However Ridley, who will reprise her role of Rey in Star Wars: Episode VIII, has shot down the Erso-theory. “I mean, I think historically [the Jyn Erso theory] wouldn’t work, because she is … Darth Vader is there … so she would ultimately be my great-grandma,” she said. “No, she would be my grandma. I mean it could happen, especially in a galaxy far, far away.” When asked about the possibility of Rey potentially being related to Obi-Wan Kenobi, the actress then replied, “We will see in a year. Just sit tight on that question…”

…Ridley was also asked about the claims her character was a Mary Sue, a term used in literature to describe an all perfect female character who can do anything with little or no training and is infallible because the plot demands it. She said, “The Mary Sue thing in itself is sexist because it’s the name of a woman. Everyone was saying that Luke had the exact same capabilities. I think Rey is incredibly vulnerable, and nothing she’s doing is for the greater good. She’s just doing what she thinks is the right thing. And she doesn’t want to do some of it, but she feels compelled to do it. So for me, I was just confused…”

…Over to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story now, and Felicity Jones’s Jane Erso was front and centre of brand new images, which you can see here…

…It must be quite exciting for someone like Gareth Edwards to helm a movie that is set just before the film that shaped his childhood, and it turns out, that is very much the case. “It’s like we’re at the playground again and there’s this hero sort of standing there,” he said when asked about Darth Vader. “You end up very respectful of him: Even though you know there’s a guy inside the outfit, you still talk to him like he’s Vader.” You can read more from that interview here…

…Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s Mad Mikkelsen is currently starring in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, and you can read my review of that here and listen to the Flickering Myth Podcast review here…

…Sideshow Collectibles continued its unveiling of its range of collectible figures from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with a batch of promotional images for the 1/6th scale C2-B5 Imperial Astromech Droid, which is available to be pre-order now priced at $139.99 and is expected to ship June-August 2017. Check out images of it here…

…Neil Calloway mentioned Star Wars in his latest article, How Can A Successful Film End Up Losing Money?, which you can read here…

… And finally, you can watch the Rebels Recon for last week’s Star Wars Rebels episode ‘The Last Battle Here’ here, and read Chris Cooper’s review here, and you can watch clips of episode 6 ‘Imperial Supercommandos’ here…

That’s all for this week – may the Force be with you.
