SPOILERS: How Geoffrey Rush feels about that big revelation in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

May 29, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Warning. Spoilers for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales follow…

Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Barbossa may have started off as a pure villain in the franchise, but he quickly became a fan-favorite, easily rivaling Captain Jack himself in popularity. Throughout the series we have seen Barbossa involved in all sorts of antics with and, without Jack Sparrow and company. However, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales takes things a step further with the character, and gives audiences a peek into his history, revealing…(SPOILERS)… that Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) is actually the long-lost daughter of Hector Barbossa. What does actor Geoffrey Rush think about this big reveal? Talking to Cinema Blend, the actor weighs in:

“It’s a bit like the Dickens novels that, episode by episode, happen over a long period of time and the readers have a contribution to it. I liked that there was a kind of surprising secret from the past that he’s obviously been sitting on and I kind of looked back on the other four films to go, if I had that knowledge, if the writers hadn’t come up with that surprise background secret in his life it all made sense. And I thought ‘gee maybe that’s where Jack the monkey came from’ it’s a repressed memory that’s found a substitute. Everything made sense.”

Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea – notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has never faced.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is directed by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning (Kon-Tiki) and features returning stars Johnny Depp , Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin McNally, Stephen Graham and Martin Klebba alongside new additions Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, David Wenham, Kaya Scodelario, Golshifteh Farahani and Paul McCartney.
