Jason Blum on Todd McFarlane directing the Spawn reboot

October 1, 2017 by Gary Collinson

After years in development, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane finally found a home for his long-planned big screen reboot of his classic comic book series back in July in Blumhouse Productions, with the studio granting McFarlane his wish to retain full creative control, as well as directing the project.

Spawn will mark McFarlane’s directorial debut, and during an interview with Coming Soon, Blumhouse’s Jason Blum has revealed that he believes the comic book creator is the perfect man for the job.

“I think he’s gonna do a great job. Being a director encompasses a lot of different skills, but one of the most important skills is you have to be a great manager. You’re kind of a General of this army that you have to lead into battle every day, and he does that in his life every day running McFarlane Enterprises. So I think that translates to directing in a lot of ways. We’ve had a great back-and-forth around developing the script. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think he could do a great job, but we’ll see. I have a good feeling about it.”

Blum also touched upon how they plan to realise McFarlane’s vision while keeping the budget low (a $10 million figure has previously been mentioned): “That’s a good question. One of the things is we’re keeping the scope of the script relatively contained, so that’s the biggest way. I think the other way is he and I aren’t paying ourselves any money out of the budget nor will any of the actors, so that’s another way. We’re using our usual tricks!”

Are you excited for Spawn’s return to the big screen? Have you got faith that McFarlane and Blumhouse can do the character justice on a low budget? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
