J.J. Abrams pitches his Star Wars: Episode IX story to Disney, working title revealed

December 18, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Now that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is here – and to a bumper opening weekend at the global box office – Disney and Lucasfilm are starting to turn their attention towards the closing chapter of the Sequel Trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX.

Having parted ways with Colin Trevorrow earlier this year, Lucasfilm jettisoned Trevorrow and Derek Connolly’s script for Episode IX, enlisting Star Wars: The Force Awakens helmer J.J. Abrams to helm the next film, as well as penning a new screenplay with Chris Terrio (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).

Well, during an investor’s call, Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed that Abrams pitched his story for Episode IX to Disney and Lucasfilm this past Friday, December 15th.

Given that Abrams and Lucasfilm haven’t since parted ways due to “creative differences”, we’ll have to assume it went down fairly well…

Meanwhile, in another Episode IX tidbit, Fantha Tracks are reporting that the film will be going under the working title ‘Black Diamond’. This has already prompted some speculation that the name relates to Supreme Leader Snoke’s kyber ring – which, as revealed in the Star Wars: The Last Jedi Visual Dictionary, was mined from the catacombs beneath Darth Vader’s Mustafar castle – but it’s also very possible that this is merely a coincidence.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set for release on December 20th, 2019.
