Jumanji beats The Greatest Showman on its opening day but succumbs to Star Wars: The Last Jedi

December 21, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has opened ahead of The Greatest Showman on its opening day at the box office.

Bringing in an estimated $7.2 million on Wednesday from 3,765 theatres, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has made a decent bow at the start of the Christmas movie season rush.

It finished considerably ahead of Hugh Jackman’s The Greatest Showman, which opened to $2.5 million from 3,005 locations.

Neither film could of course get anywhere near Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which added to its already titanic haul with $16.9 million on Wednesday, bringing its six day total to $278.8 million.

The Last Jedi will also stay on top over the Christmas period, and is expected to bring in as much as $120 million between Wednesday and Monday, well ahead of the $48 million or so expected from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
