Fifty Shades Freed opens to $137 million worldwide, pushes the trilogy beyond $1 billion

February 11, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Universal Pictures unleashed the third and final chapter of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy into cinemas around the globe this weekend, with the Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan-headlined erotic drama Fifty Shades Freed whipping up a $137 million opening worldwide.

The film, directed by Fifty Shades Darker helmer James Foley, grossed $38.8 million domestically (down from the $85.1 million debut of Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015 and the $46.6 million opening weekend of last year’s Fifty Shades Darker). Internationally, it added a further $98.1 million from international markets.

The Fifty Shades of Grey franchise has now earned $1.089 billion worldwide, and is expected to top out at aruond $1.25 billion. Not bad for a combined budget of $150 million…
