LeBron James to produce House Party remake

February 15, 2018 by Gary Collinson

According to The Wrap, NBA star LeBron James is set to produce a remake of the 1990 comedy House Party for SpringHill Entertainment and New Line Cinema. The new film is being penned by Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori (Atlanta), and will revolve around – as you might expect – a house party that goes horribly wrong.

“This is definitely not a reboot,” said James. “It’s an entirely new look for a classic movie. Everyone I grew up with loved House Party. To partner with this creative team to bring a new House Party to a new generation is unbelievable. Listen, it’s fun, it’s an honor when I got the opportunity to produce it, reboot the whole movie, man, I had so much fun as a kid watching that movie.”

At this point, there are no plans for a cameo from James, who remains attached to star in a Space Jam sequel from Star Trek Beyond helmer Justin Lin. James and fellow producer Maverick Carter are however considering having several notable musicians make appearances in the film, as well as contributing to the soundtrack.

Directed by Reginald Hudlin and headlined by hip-hop duo Kid ‘n Play, the original 1990 movie has gone on to become a cult classic, and spawned two sequels – House Party 2 in 1991 and House Party 3 in 1994 – as well as the direct-to-video follow-ups House Party 4: Down to the Last Minute in 2001 and House Party: Tonight’s the Night in 2013.
