DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 17 – ‘Guest Starring John Noble’

April 4, 2018 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews the seventeenth episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 3…

What in the actual hell is going on here? Legends loves to bend the rules quite a bit but there’s just so much happening this episode. A young “Barry” Barack Obama guest stars? Grodd is back, again and gets stuck inside a bottle. Damien Darhk teams with the Legends…and then of course, betrays them.

I put Ray’s face up here because he was just fantastic in this episode. From his song about Nate’s special codes for emergencies to him geeking out that he met John Noble because, well, the demon possessing Nora Darhk sounds a lot like him (he does the voice for Mallus). Tonight’s episode I enjoyed because it’s classic Legends craziness, but you could make an argument it’s just too busy. The main storyline I really was invested in was the moment when Ray becomes a PA on Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and tricks John Noble into recording some lines that trick Nora Darhk. This was some of the most creative, smartest writing. And how this all came about? Apparently, randomly, Rory loves those movies and wanted to watch them. Yep.

There’s a lot of other stuff going on here; yes we see young Obama, but there’s also the story of Amaya traveling back in time, possibly breaking the time barrier again, so Nate and Wally go to stop her. Her old woman makeup is possibly the worst thing ever and it comes to find out, no matter what she did, Grodd always destroyed her village. It still doesn’t repair the damage between her and Nate and it feels wasted to break them up ultimately because of how much time was invested in this storyline. Darhk also turns on the Legends when he gets the Death totem from Sara because, of course he does and we are finally revealed to Mallus’ true form, which looked like a Demon from a Syfy movie. Sort of disappointing as we move into the finale.

Rating: 9/10
