Phoebe Waller-Bridge was actually kitted out in a L3-37 costume for her role as the droid while shooting Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Seeing the new droids in Star Wars movies is always a fun little thing to look forward to and Solo is going to be no different, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge playing a character called L3-37 in the upcoming movie.

Posting to Instagram, Solo’s costume designer, Glyn Dillon, said:

“A shout out to all involved in making this costume come to life… That’s right folks, the excellent Phoebe Walker Bridge [sic] wasn’t wearing just a mocap suit, she was wearing what you see here and the excellent VFX team led by @rbredow ‘removed’ her and replaced her, in post, with the skeleton and ‘guts’ that the excellent @supergoose23 assembled… in real life (not in a computer).”

Star Wars fans certainly have a soft spot for practical effects, so news that L3-37 was actually physically present during filming is surely going to delight.

A new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story features Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the famous smuggler, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Tobias Beckett, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi’Ra, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, Ian Kenny (Sing Street) as Rebolt, Harley Durst (Wonder Woman) as Moloch, Jon Favreau (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Rio Durant, Tien Hoang (Now You See Me 2) as Moloch’s henchman and Paul Bettany (Avengers: Infinity War) and Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) in as-yet-unrevealed roles
