James Cromwell and Bruce Dern join Civil War drama Emperor

June 26, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that James Cromwell (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Bruce Dern (The Hateful Eight) have joined the cast of director Mark Amin’s Civil War-abolitionist film Emperor.

The film centres on Shields Green (Dayo Okeniyi), a slave who in 1859 escaped from a plantation and made a daring journey north where he met Frederick Douglass (Harry Lennix) and John Brown (Cromwell). With the opportunity to continue to freedom in Canada, Green instead chose to fight to end slavery.

Emperor is being directed by former Lionsgate executive Mark Amin, who co-wrote the script with Pat Charles. Filming is currently taking place in Savannah, George, with a cast that also includes Paul Scheer, Naturi Naughton, Mykelti Williamson, Ben Robson, Keean Johnson, and Kat Graham.
