Supergirl season 4 will pay homage to Superman: Red Son

June 25, 2018 by Gary Collinson

If you caught the season three finale of Supergirl this past week, you’ll be aware that the episode closed with a tantalising tease of what’s to come, as a doppelgänger of Kara was seen making her way to a Russian military base in Siberia.

Speaking to TV Line, executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller have revealed that this scene sets the stage for season four, with a storyline inspired by the Elseworlds comic book tale Superman: Red Son.

“For fans of the comics, I think they might recognize that the story we want to tell is inspired by the iconic DC Comics’ Red Son, which told an alternate origin story for Superman,” said Rovner, with Queller adding: “What happened if — as a baby — Superman landed in Russia and became a hero there instead of in America. It’s an homage to that.”

Written by Mark Millar, Red Son is a fan favourite Superman tale, and there have been rumours lately suggesting that Warner Bros. has been considering a live-action movie, with Kong: Skull Island helmer Jordan Vogt-Roberts revealing that he’d pitched the concept to the studio. Meanwhile, DC animation legend Bruce Timm has also stated that he’d like to tackle the story as part of Warner’s DC Universe Animated Original Movies line.
