The Happytime Murders gag that was deemed too vulgar for the movie

July 18, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

As we saw from the first trailer, The Henson Company’s upcoming puppet noir comedy The Happytime Murders certainly looks to be making full use of its R-rating with a healthy dose of sex, violence, swearing and drug use.

However, as director Brian Henson has revealed to Cinema Blend, there was one joke which they felt took things too far, and as such was cut from the movie at an early stage.

“We did have a bar scene, with a bartender puppet that had a singing penis, which was a very funny joke that we decided not to do,” said Henson. “That one won’t make it in the movie. We probably have stepped over, in a couple of places, that I’ll learn as I get it all cut together, and then maybe will pull it back a little bit, but the idea is that it really is uncensored. It really is quite dirty, but it’s mostly language and implied sexuality. It’s not graphically sexual.”

No Sesame. All Street. THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS is a filthy comedy set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives with a shared secret, one human (Melissa McCarthy) and one puppet, are forced to work together again to solve the brutal murders of the former cast of a beloved classic puppet television show.

The Happytime Murders is set for release on August 17th.
