Zendaya keen on Ariel role in The Little Mermaid

September 24, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last month a report surfaced claiming that Walt Disney Pictures had offered Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Greatest Showman star Zendaya the title role in its planned live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and now the singer and actress has weighed in on the rumours.

Speaking to Variety at the premiere of her new film, the animated comedy Smallfoot, Zendaya refused to confirm or deny whether she was up for the role, but did express her interest in playing Ariel, stating: “I mean, yeah, why wouldn’t I?”

Zendaya is the first name to be linked to the role of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, which has been scripted by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman) and is reporting eyeing Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Mary Poppins Returns) to direct.

Zendaya is currently shooting the Marvel and Sony sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home, and does have past experience with Disney, having starred alongside Bella Thorne in the Disney Channel sitcom Shake It Up between 2010 and 2013.
