Ben Barnes talks Billy Russo return in The Punisher season 2

December 31, 2018 by Gary Collinson

As we saw in the season finale of The Punisher, Ben Barnes’ Billy Russo seemingly completed his transformation into the Marvel villain Jigsaw after a savage beat down from Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) which left his face a ravaged mess. However, according to Barnes, the character won’t be adopting the Jigsaw moniker in the upcoming second season of the Netflix show.

“[They] don’t refer to the character, in the series, as Jigsaw,” Barnes told Collider. “He very much has a jigsaw puzzle in his brain. It’s not necessarily about his face, it’s about the psychological, which is how they try and approach everything. Particularly this season, even more than last season.”

As we saw in set photos from season two of The Punisher, Russo’s facial scarring in the series won’t be anywhere near as extreme as his comic book counterpart, and Barnes explained that the producers wanted to go with a more grounded take:

“They tried quite carefully to figure out all the specific injuries from exactly what happened to him designated to leave a scar. He gets shot in the cheek, a ricochet into the cheek, so there’s a bullet wound hole in the cheek. We hear the doctor saying he’s undergone many surgeries, obviously for the stab wound in his stomach but also on his face. He’s had a plastic surgeon try and fix him. With all these stories, they’ve gone for a more grounded version of what that imagery would be.”

Moore as Curtis Hoyle, Josh Stewart as John Pilgrim, Floriana Lima as Krista Dumont, Giogia Whigham as Amy Bendix, Annette O’Toole as Eliza Schultz, and Corbin Bernsen as Anderson Schultz.
