Over 45 million people watched Netflix’s Bird Box in its first week

December 29, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

While Netflix is usually super-secretive with regards to viewing figures, the streaming service has made the unusual step of revealing the numbers for its Sandra Bullock-headlined post-apocalyptic thriller Bird Box, announcing that the film has attracted over 45 million viewers in its first seven days – the highest ever for any original Netflix film.

Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film! pic.twitter.com/uorU3cSzHR

It’s not entirely clear what Netflix counts as a view (does it include accidental auto-plays, or those plays which only run for a few seconds/minutes?), and of course its impossible to calculate what percentage of these 45 million views would have translated to ticket sales through a theatrical release. Nevertheless, Netflix is sure to be extremely happy with the numbers, given that the film was produced on a budget of just $20 million.

When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life. Facing the unknown, Malorie finds love, hope and a new beginning only for it to unravel. Now she must flee with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But to survive, they’ll have to undertake the perilous two-day journey blindfolded. Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock leads an all-star cast that includes Trevante Rhodes, with Sarah Paulson, and John Malkovich in BIRD BOX, a compelling new thriller from Academy Award winner Susanne Bier.

Bird Box features a cast that includes Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich, Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar, Danielle Macdonald, Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander, Colson Baker, and BD Wong.
