After unveiling the first footage on Sunday night, HBO chief Richard Plepler has now been talking up the hugely-anticipated eighth season of its epic fantasy series Game of Thrones, stating that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have “exceeded the bar” with the show’s final six episodes.
“It’s a spectacle,” Plepler tells Variety. “The guys have done six movies. The reaction I had while watching them was, ‘I’m watching a movie.’ They knew the bar was high. They’ve exceeded the bar. I’ve watched them twice without any CGI and I’m in awe. Everybody’s in for an extraordinary treat of storytelling and of magical, magical production.”
It’s previously been said that while the final season has a shortened episode count of just six, every episode is over an hour in length, with some pushing the 90 minute mark.
The final season of Game of Thrones gets underway in April, while HBO is also currently deep in development on its first A Song of Ice and Fire spinoff pilot The Long Night.
