Hellboy officially receives R-rating for violence, language and gore

February 28, 2019 by Gary Collinson

This won’t come as a surprise given that it has been marketed as such since it was first announced, but Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot of Hellboy has been granted an R-rating by the Motion Picture Association of America for “strong bloody violence and gore throughout, and language”.

It's what we deserve. Neil Marshall's HELLBOY: Rated R for strong bloody violence and gore throughout, and language…and because they advertised it as "Legendary AF."

New Hellboy actor David Harbour had previously discussed how the film will adopt a darker and more brutal approach than Guilldermo del Toro’s films, stating that: “There’s really a sense that you’re actually killing things, even if they are giants or monsters. You’re chopping their heads off, you’re bathing in their blood and you’re feeling the complex feelings of actually cutting the heart out of another thing. We’re taking the time to deal with the fact that Hellboy is a killer. He’s a weapon.”

Hellboy is back, and he’s on fire. From the pages of Mike Mignola’s seminal work, this action-packed story sees the legendary half-demon superhero (David Harbour, “Stranger Things”) called to the English countryside to battle a trio of rampaging giants. There he discovers The Blood Queen, Nimue (Milla Jovovich, Resident Evil series), a resurrected ancient sorceress thirsting to avenge a past betrayal. Suddenly caught in a clash between the supernatural and the human, Hellboy is now hell-bent on stopping Nimue without triggering the end of the world.

Hellboy is set for release on April 12th 2019 sees Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones) directing Stranger Thingsstar David Harbour in the lead role alongside Ian McShane (American Gods) as Professor Bruttenholm, Sasha Lane (American Honey) as Alice Monaghan, Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) as the Queen of Blood, Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-O) as Major Ben Daimio and Penelope Mitchell (The Vampire Diaries) as Ganeida.
