Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand and Joel Coen team for Macbeth

March 31, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that Denzel Washington is set to team with fellow Oscar-winners Frances McDormand and Joel Coen for a new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Details on the project are scarce, but Coen will direct and write the script for the film, which is being produced by Scott Rudin for A24.

Macbeth tells the story of a Scottish general who is prophesied by a trio of witches to one day become King of Scotland, and with the help of his wife Lady Macbeth, sets out to seize the throne and consolidate his power by any means necessary.

The stage play has been adapted countless times, most recently in 2015, with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard starring and Justin Kurzel directing.
