Joss Whedon’s HBO sci-fi drama The Nevers casts Outlander’s Laura Donnelly

April 28, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Last summer it was announced that Joss Whedon is returning to the small screen for his first TV series since Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., with HBO placing a series order for a sci-fi drama entitled The Nevers.

As revealed by Deadline, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator has now found his leading lady for the project, with Laura Donnelly (Outlander) set to take on the role of Amalia True, a member of a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.

Amalia is described as “the most reckless, impulsive, emotionally damaged hero of her time and a menace to stuffy Victorian society, she would die for the cause and kill for a drink.”

“Laura Donnelly has charisma, wisdom and an anarchic precision that not only captures Amalia but defines her,” said Whedon, who has created The Nevers with Buffy alumni Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie. “She’s fierce and she’s funny – and I need both for the journey ahead.”

Donnelly will next be seen on the big screen alongside Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins in the J.R.R. Tolkien biopic Tolkien.
