Maisie Williams thinks Arya should have succumbed to her darker instincts and killed Cersei in Game of Thrones

May 24, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Maisie Williams, who starred as Arya on Game of Thrones, thinks her character should have succumbed to her desire for revenge and killed Cersei.

For the longest time, it seemed like Arya was destined to kill Cersei but as anyone who pays attention to the show knows, things rarely turn out as expected, people do not get what they want.

Instead of killing Cersei, Arya listens to The Hound’s heartfelt advice and avoids the path of revenge, not adding one more body to her list of victims. Maisie Williams, however, thinks Arya should have given in to her darker instincts and killed Cersei along with herself.

Speaking to EW, the actress said: “I just wanted to be on set with Lena again, she’s good fun. And I wanted Arya to kill Cersei even if it means [Arya] dies too. Even up to the point when Cersei’s with Jaime I thought [while reading the script], ‘He’s going to whip off his face [and reveal its Arya]’ and they’re both going to die. I thought that’s what Arya’s drive has been.”

Williams is not wrong that killing Cersei had been her drive but perhaps what she is missing is that Arya was offered a path out of this dark cycle of murder and revenge, the chance to escape by listening to her friend who had been destroyed by his own violent desires.
