Avengers: Endgame almost featured the MCU’s first “f*ck”

June 9, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

While the Marvel Studios policy seems to be to stick firmly in the family arena, it seems that Avengers: Endgame came close to pushing the boundaries of PG-13 by dropping the MCU’s first (unbleeped) use of the word “fuck”.

Speaking to Empire Online, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely discussed how they came up with Robert Downey Jr.’s final “I am Iron Man” line during filming, revealing that the scene went through many iterations on set, including one where Tony Stark drops the F-Bomb.

“I think there was ‘fuck you’ at one point. Didn’t he say ‘fuck off’? He may have said it… you do a lot of takes. Like can we really end all this on a complete swear? On a ‘kiss my ass Thanos’?”

While Tony telling Thanos to fuck off would surely have got a laugh from the audience (and probably infuriated a few parents), it certainly wouldn’t have had quite the same impact as the final version. Still, one for the Blu-ray extras, perhaps?
