Mark Hamill discusses Luke’s return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Rian Johnson may have killed him off in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but we haven’t see the last of Luke Skywalker just yet, as Mark Hamill is set to reprise the role of the Jedi Master in this year’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Given that the film is being billed as the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga, Episode IX will presumably mark Hamill’s (no pun intended) final outing as Luke, and the actor has confirmed to AP that he’s hoping to hang up the Jedi robes once and for all with the next film.

“I sure hope so,” said Hamill when asked if Rise of Skywalker will be his final Star Wars movie. “I had closure in the last one. The fact that I’m involved in any capacity is only becuase of that peculiar aspect of the Star Wars mythology where if you’re a Jedi you get to come back and make a curtain call as a Force Ghost.”

Many fans have been disappointed the way the Sequel Trilogy has handled Luke Skywalker, with the character restricted to a brief cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens before his divisive appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If The Rise of Skywalker is indeed his final outing, let’s hope it does him justice…

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 20th 2019 with J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Warsveterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Mabeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
