The Purge 5 finds a director

August 4, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Back in October of last year, franchise creator James DeMonaco revealed that the hugely successful Blumhouse horror-thriller series The Purge is set to come to an end with a fifth movie, and now comes word from Variety that Everardo Gout (Luke Cage, Mars) has signed on to direct the next instalment.

Plot details for The Purge 5 are being kept under wraps, but DeMonaco – who is writing the script – has previously teased that: “I think it’s a great way to end it all. We want to end it all, I think, in this one, and I’m very excited. When I came up with the idea and pitched it to everybody, they seemed psyched, and I think it will be a really cool ending, how we take this one home.”

The Purge was released in 2013 and takes place in a near-future America which celebrates an annual holiday known as ‘The Purge’ – a 12 hour period where all crimes are legal. It spawned sequels in 2014, 2016 and 2018, with the most recent, The First Purge, becoming the highest-grossing instalment to date with $137 million worldwide.

Along with the movies, The Purge has also spun off into television, with the first season of the TV series airing on USA Network last year and a second season set to premiere in the Fall.

The Purge 5 is set for release in North America on July 10th 2020.
