Universal rebooting Sudden Death as buddy comedy with Michael Jai White and Gary Owen

August 21, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Universal 1140 has announced that Michael Jai White (Spawn, Black Dynamite) is set to star in Welcome to Sudden Death, a reboot of the original 1995 movie Sudden Death from director Peter Hyams and star Jean-Claude Van Damme.

The reboot is being directed by Dallas Jackson (Thriller), and will put a comedic twist on the plot of the original, which saw JCVD as an ex-fireman battling terrorists who have kidnapped the Vice President in an arena during the final game of the NHL Stanley Cup.

White will star in the new film alongside comedian and actor Gary Owen (Think Like A Man, Ride Along), with production set to begin in Winnipeg, Canada this week.

“I’m such a huge fan of martial-arts films I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to reboot this cult classic with Universal 1440,” said director Jackson. “Michael Jai White and Gary Owen are both at the top of their game right now and an on-screen dream team. We’re having a blast making this movie and putting a twist on the buddy-action genre. I can’t wait for the world to see what we’re cooking!”

Welcome to Sudden Death will premiere on Netflix in June 2020.
