UPDATE: The Simpsons showrunner debunks reports that the show is ending

November 28, 2019 by Gary Collinson

UPDATE: Following comments from The Simpsons composer Danny Elfman that the animated series is coming to an end, executive producer Al Jean has taken to social media to debunk the report that the end is near for the citizens of Springfield; check out his tweet below, followed by our original story…

.@TheSimpsons We are all thankful the following article is NOT TRUE: https://t.co/2Z0VqdfIEM

— Al Jean (@AlJean) November 28, 2019

The longest-running American primetime scripted television series in history may be coming to an end, as composer Danny Elfman has suggested to Joe that the beloved animated show The Simpsons is approaching the finish line.

“Well, from what I’ve heard, it is coming to an end,” said Elfman. “I don’t know for a fact, but I’ve heard that it will be in its last year. All I can say is that I’m so flabbergasted and amazed that it has lasted as long as it did. You have to realise, when I scored The Simpsons, I wrote this crazy piece of music, and I expected no one would hear it, because I really did not think the show had a chance in hell.”

The Simpsons is currently in its 31st season, and has already been renewed for a 32nd, although it was reported earlier this year that Disney – which now owns the property after the Fox acquisition – has been considering axing the show in order to bring to an end its original broadcast syndication deals from the early 1990s, which were open-ended and continue as long as new episodes are produced. Cancelling the show would allow the Mouse House to negotiate new broadcast, cable and streaming deals, potentially earning billions of dollars in the process.

What do you make of this news? Is it time to bring the curtain down on The Simpsons? Let us know in the comments or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
