Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D star Clark Gregg on whether he will play Coulson again

May 21, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Although Clark Gregg, who is best known for playing Agent Phil Coulson in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, has portrayed the character since 2008 when the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off with Iron Man, he is currently unsure about his future given the impending final season of the ABC series.

In a recent interview with Variety, Coulson addressed whether or not he’d be playing Coulson again once Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has concluded, and how grateful he is for the chance to play this character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“This seems like a real good time to announce that … I really don’t know,” Gregg shared with a laugh. “Sorry. That was a little bit of quarantine sadism. I don’t know anything! It’s hard for me to imagine a scenario where I’d say, ‘No, I’m too busy to put on whatever the latest version of the suit is and go play Phil Coulson.’ I’m always thrilled when I see them changing timelines and exposing a multiverse in the cinematic [universe]. Because I think, ‘Well, I’ve seen scenarios where I could be around!’ So I really learned with this character to never say never, but I’m also really grateful for the ride that we had.”

While there are seemingly no plans for Coulson after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has come to an end, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is forever expanding in both film and TV format so maybe the character can return one day if the story requires him.

Clark Gregg first portrayed Coulson in Iron Man and appeared in Iron Man 2 and Thor before meeting his end in 2012’s The Avengers at the hands of Tom Hiddlestone’s Loki. However, Coulson was later revived and given his very own show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, where he has been a major role for seven seasons, and also appeared in the 1990s-set Captain Marvel.

Picking up where we left off with Season 6 — and the reveal of a new Phil Coulson Life Model Decoy — Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are thrust backwards in time and stranded in 1931 New York City. With the all-new Zephyr set to time-jump at any moment, the team must hurry to find out exactly what happened. If they fail, it would mean disaster for the past, present, and future of the world.

The seventh and final season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. features a cast including Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, and Jeff Ward.

The final season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to premiere on ABC on May 27th.
