Star Wars: Internal mechanics of Rey’s yellow Rise of Skywalker lightsaber revealed

May 20, 2020 by Samuel Brace

A concept artist for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has revealed the internal mechanics and design for Rey’s lightsaber.

At the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, we see Rey on Tatooine take out her new lightsaber after having buried the weapons of Luke and Leia. Her own saber surprised fans with its gold colour and dynamic ignition.

Now fans have gotten a much closer look at the weapon as Matthew Savage, a concept artist on Episode IX, has posted to Instagram some stills and video of the blade’s inner workings and mechanics.

Savage wrote: “It wasn’t needed in the end but we did design the inner workings and kyber crystal cage for Rey’s lightsaber. Drawn before we knew what colour the blade would be. Swipe for animation.”

It’s pretty cool to see and interesting that they went into so much depth regarding how this weapon would work on the inside. Who knows, perhaps we will get to see more of Rey’s lightsaber in future Star Wars stories.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
