Crossbones actor Frank Grillo says he’s “outgrown” Marvel movies

June 11, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Frank Grillo, the actor behind the MCU’s Crossbones, doesn’t think he will return and is no longer interested in playing another Marvel character in The Punisher.

Frank Grillo portrayed Crossbones/Brock Rumlow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier before reprising the role in subsequent MCU films. Grillo has also expressed interest in the past in portraying the Punisher on the big screen.

Now, however, the actor thinks his time in the MCU and with superhero films, in general, is in the past. When asked if he was still interested in the Punisher by Uproxx, he said:

“That’s not in my trajectory now. It’s not where my life is taking me anymore, and my friend Jonny Bernthal did an amazing job [as Frank Castle]. My life and what I want to do is much different now, and I think I’m outgrowing that whole kind-of Marvel and superhero thing.

“Joe [Carnahan] and I have a really good little company in WarParty, and we’re concentrating on action thrillers that are responsibly budgeted, and we’re very busy, knock wood, and we’ll go down the path of creating our own material and content and having a good time.”

Jon Bernthal was pretty well received in his role as the Punisher on Netflix but with that show now being cancelled, there is scope for Marvel to recast the role. Though, with the character’s extremely violent nature, it seems that a Disney+ show or big-screen appearance would be unlikely.

What do you make of Grillo’s comments? Do you think he’d have made a good Frank Castle? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
