Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn says Vol. 3 “probably” his last, rules out directing an Avengers movie

June 18, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Although he’s currently taking a detour to the DC Extended Universe with The Suicide Squad, filmmaker James Gunn is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to round out his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy with Vol. 3.

For a time, it looked like Gunn would have to hand over the reins to Vol. 3 due to his social media silliness, but with the filmmaker back on board for the third instalment he’s responded to a fan question on Instagram about the prospect of a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 by stating: “[Vol. 3] is probably my last on, and probably the last with the current team. But you never know!”

Short of killing off the entire team in Vol. 3, it’s unlikely we’ll have seen the last of the current crop of Guardians in the MCU, but the director has long suggested that his three GotG films will “tell one story” and that a fourth movie would likely feature a new line-up of characters.

Whether Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 proves to be Gunn’s final contribution to the MCU remains a mystery at this point, although judging by his response to another fan question about him directing an Avengers movie, we certainly won’t be seeing him assembling Earth’s Mightiest Heroes: “I haven’t been asked, but I wouldn’t do it if I was.”

Are you looking forward to the conclusion of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy? Are there any other Marvel properties you’d like to see him tackle in the future? Let us know in the comments or on social media @flickeringmyth…
