Paramount sets 2022 release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 2

July 24, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Paramount Pictures has set an April 8th, 2022 release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the sequel to this year’s video game movie adaptation.

While details regarding casting or a production start date are currently being kept under wraps – presumably due to the ongoing global health crisis – it’s safe to assume Ben Schwartz (Sonic) and Jim Carrey (Dr Robotnik) are expected to return for the sequel. However, James Marsden has previously stated that he is already signed on for multiple sequels – hinting that his future with the franchise seems likely at this point.

Upon its release, Sonic the Hedgehog achieved the number one opening weekend of all time for a movie based on a video game and ended up earning just over $300 million at the worldwide box office, from a budget of around $90 million.

Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination.

Sonic the Hedgehog is directed by Jeff Fowler (Gopher Broke) and features a cast that includes Ben Schwartz (House of Lies), James Marsden (Westworld), Jim Carrey (Kidding), Adam Pally (Happy Endings), Tika Sumpter (Ride Along), Neal McDonough (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), and Natasha Rothwell (Love, Simon).
