HBO Max orders Our Flag Means Death series from Taika Waititi

September 17, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Taika Waititi is gearing up to go into production on his second Marvel Cinematic Universe offering Thor: Love and Thunder early in the New Year, after which he’ll be taking a trip to the galaxy far, far away to direct a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm.

However, it seems he’ll be squeezing another project in between the two huge Disney franchises, as HBO Max has granted a series order to Our Flag Means Death, a period comedy which Waititi will executive produce, as well as directing the pilot.

Our Flag Means Death is loosely based on the true adventures of Stede Bonnet, a pampered aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become a pirate. Waititi will executive produce alongside Garrett Basch (What We Do In the Shadows) and creator and showrunner David Jenkins (People of Earth).

“A series concept like this jumps off the page and you can instantly envision every moment,” says Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max. “David and Taika’s unique take on Bonnet’s rollicking misadventures on the high seas, are sure to thrill and delight audiences everywhere.”
