Knives Out director Rian Johnson expresses frustration with writing the sequel

September 25, 2020 by Liam Waddington

While we know Lionsgate has already greenlit a sequel to the Oscar-nominated murder mystery Knives Out, it seems like writer/director Rian Johnson is experiencing some frustration when it comes to writing the script.

In a recent conversation in Interview Magazine with The Devil All the Time director Antonio Campos, Johnson revealed his creative difficulties when it comes to writing the second instalment while also once again clarifying that it isn’t technically a “Knives Out sequel.”

“I’m actually writing another Knives Out,” Johnson explained. “It’s been such a mindfuck, because I sat on the idea for the first one for 10 years. And with this one, I’m starting with a blank page. It’s not really a Knives Out sequel. I need to come up with a title for it so I can stop calling it ‘The Knives Out Sequel’ because it’s just Daniel Craig as the same detective with a totally new cast.”

Johnson has previously stated that the Knives Out follow-up movie will follow in the same vein of Agatha Christie’s Poirot novels by featuring an entirely new cast in a completely different setting, with the exception of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc.

“The same way Agatha Christie wrote a bunch of Poirot novels, we can do that with Blanc and keep making new mysteries, you know, whole new cast, whole new location, whole new mystery, it’s just another Beniot Blanc mystery… There’s so many different things you could do with it.”

Acclaimed writer and director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, The Last Jedi) pays tribute to mystery mastermind Agatha Christie in KNIVES OUT, a fun, modern-day murder mystery where everyone is a suspect. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death. With an all-star ensemble cast including Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell, KNIVES OUT is a witty and stylish whodunit guaranteed to keep audiences guessing until the very end.
