Yahya Abdul-Mateen II teases the script for The Matrix 4, says “people are really gonna like this”

September 22, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Fresh from his Emmy win for Watchmen, actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is set to star in the upcoming fourth The Matrix film, has shared his impression of the script and his experience of working with the returning director, Lana Wachowski.

Although Abdul-Mateen II couldn’t reveal too much story about The Matrix 4, he teased his reaction to the script and gave vague details about the direction of the story during a recent interview with Collider to promote his upcoming film, The Trial of the Chicago 7.

“My reaction to the script [was], ‘Wow, people are really gonna like this. I like this. People are really gonna like this,'” Abdul-Mateen II said. “It’s different and it’s the same, you know, at the same time. So it’s a really, really very intelligent blend of what we want and what we may not know that we want.”

Abdul-Mateen II continued to describe his first meeting with director Lana Wachowski and explained she wanted to create a strong bond between the actors rather than simply hiring a cast.

“My first meeting with Lana wasn’t even really an audition. It was just that it was a meeting about getting to know me, and getting to know her, and our histories, and how I am as an actor. Lana was interested in creating a family before she was interested in creating a cast. I was very fortunate enough to be welcomed into that family. To be over in Berlin with that team, making something special is definitely something that I’m proud to say I’m a part of.”

Abdul-Mateen II isn’t the only member of the cast to tease the script for The Matrix 4 as franchise star Keanu Reeves recently described the plot as an “inspiring love story.”

“We have a wonderful writer and director, Lana Wachowski, and she’s really written a beautiful, beautiful script that is a love story, it’s inspiring, it’s another version of a kind of call to wake up, and entertains, great action. And all will be revealed,” Reeves said.

Unfortunately, the plot for The Matrix 4 is currently being kept under wraps at Warner Bros. but we do know John Wick filmmakers Chad Stahelski and David Leitch – who served as stunt performers and coordinators on 1999’s The Matrix and its sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions – are returning to help out on certain action sequences.

The Matrix 4 is being directed by Lana Wachowski from a script by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. The cast features returning Matrix cast members Keanu Reeves (Neo), Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Niobe) alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Neil Patrick Harris (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Jonathan Groff (Frozen II), Priyanka Chopra (Baywatch), Ellen Hollman (Spartacus) and Andrew Caldwell (iZombie), as well as Sense8 stars Erendira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt and Brian J. Smith.
