Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead receiving prequel film and anime series

Although Zack Snyder’s new zombie action movie Army of the Dead doesn’t debut on Netflix until next year, the streaming service has announced a prequel film and an anime series are currently in development.

According to Deadline, the prequel will be directed by and star Matthias Schweighöfer and will follow his Army of the Dead character Ludwig Dieter. Shay Hatten, one of the writers of the screenplay for Army of the Dead, will write the prequel with Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, and Wesley Coller producing the film.

Meanwhile, the anime series, titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, will follow the origin story of Dave Bautista’s Scott and his rescue crew during the initial fall of Vegas as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak. The anime series will also feature Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick and Ella Purnell who will reprise their film roles.

Zack Snyder will direct two episodes of the anime series with Jay Oliva (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) serving as showrunner as well as also directing two episodes of the series. Shay Hatten will also write the anime series as well as the prequel with Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Wesley Coller serving as executive producers alongside Jay Olivia and Hatten.

Army of the Dead revolves around a team of mercenaries who venture into a zombie-infected Las Vegas to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. Dave Bautista (Stuber) leads a cast that also includes Ella Purnell (Sweetbitter), Omari Hardwick (Power), Tig Notaro (Star Trek: Discovery), Hiroyuki Sanada (Westworld), Raul Castillo (Vida), Nora Arnezeder (Origin), Matthias Schweighöfer (The Manny), Samantha Win (Wonder Woman), Rich Cetrone (Thor), Ana de la Reguera (Power) and Garrett Dillahunt (Fear The Walking Dead).
