Comic Book Review – The Red Mother #8

October 14, 2020 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews The Red Mother #8…

The beautifully crafted ongoing saga of The Red Mother is one of the most intriguing stories in BOOM! Studios current line up. The tale of Daisy and her interesting life always appears to have more going on in the background that readers will have a hard time trying to second guess.

The issue picks up straight from issue #7’s cliffhanger, the attacker standing over Cordelia with a knife and Daisy having a fight or flight moment. The scene shows the character’s growth from victim to fighter, where she was helpless before there is something tangible and real to attack now. The opening pages see a quick fight in the church before the ramifications play out over the remainder of the issue, and the happy scenes of bliss from issue #7 fade away as the chaos is introduced back into Daisy’s life.

Once again the art style is more realistic in this series and it really shows that the characters are the main focus of this tale. Background design is crafted extremely well showing off realistic versions of London streets and tube stations. The more interesting point are the moments where the frame turns red and we know exactly what is happening…. kind of…. as the demonic spirit appears and things start to get strange.

The issue ties up with a familiar mysterious character returning to wreak more havoc on Daisy’s life. As the readers are getting more pulled into the engrossing story we will have to just wait with baited breath for issue #9.

Rating – 8/10
