Gal Gadot to reunite with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins for Cleopatra

October 11, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Gal Gadot and her Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins are set to swap Themyscira for Ancient Egypt, with Deadline reporting that the star and filmmaker are set to reunite for Cleopatra, a new biographical drama of the legendary Egyptian ruler.

As revealed by the trade, Paramount Pictures has won an auction for the package, fending off competition from Universal, Warner Bros., Netflix and Apple. The historical epic is being produced by Gadot and Jenkins, along with Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven, who has served as producer on Gadot’s DCEU appearances.

Paramount is said to have won the rights due to its eagerness to mount a big budget theatrical release film as quickly as possible. The film will be scripted by Laeta Kalogridis (Alita: Battle Angel), and the plan is to shoot the movie before Gadot and Jenkins reunite once again for a planned third Wonder Woman movie.

The story of Cleopatra was previously brought to the big screen with director Joseph Mankiewicz’s lavish 1963 movie starring Elizabeth Taylor, which was at the time the most expensive movie ever made and almost bakrupted its studio 20th Century Fox.

Next up from Gadot and Jenkins is the DC sequel Wonder Woman 1984, which is currently slated for release on Christmas Day – assuming it isn’t delayed once again by the ongoing global health crisis.
