Tom Sturridge to play Dream in Netflix’s The Sandman

October 3, 2020 by Gary Collinson

With production slated to begin later this month, it seems that Warner Bros. TV may have found its Dream for the long-awaited adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic The Sandman.

According to Collider, British actor Tom Sturridge (Sweetbitter, Velvet Buzzsaw) is in final negotiations for the title role in the TV series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s seminal comic book series. Sturridge  reportedly won the role after testing earlier this year along with Tom York (Poldark) and Colin Morgan (Merlin).

The Sandman follows “the adventures of Morpheus, lord of dreams and member of a pantheon of immortal beings called The Endless who personify certain universal concepts that, along with dream, includes death, desire, destiny, delirium, despair, and destruction.”

Warner Bros. has been looking to adapt The Sandman since the late 1990s, with its efforts for both film and TV adaptations stagnating in development hell. However, Netflix came on board last year, granting a series order to a new take from showrunner Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman), who is executive producing with Gaiman and David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy).
