The Most Gut-Wrenching Scenes in Video Games

November 1, 2020 by Red Stewart

Red Stewart presents five gut-wrenching moments in video games…

The more story-focused video games become, the more problematic they are. On the one hand, we play these colorful polygons and sprites for escapism, but on the other hand, there is a hard market for realism. And with realism comes genuine emotions, brought about by three-dimensional characters and dramatic structures.

Some pioneering game writers have explored how much pathos they can flood into a narrative. In turn, creating some of the most gut-wrenching scenes we have ever had the misfortune, or fortune, to witness, experience, and ultimately remember to this day.

Because of this, here are five we believe to be of the best quality. Beware of spoilers for Mass Effect 3, Spec Ops, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Far Cry 3, and To The Moon.
