Watchmen’s Hong Chau joins Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, Samantha Morton and Sadie Sink also in talks

February 11, 2021 by Ricky Church

Deadline reports actress Hong Chau (Watchmen) has joined Brendan Fraser (Doom Patrol) in Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming film The Whale.

The Whale tells the story of “a reclusive English teacher suffering from severe obesity who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter for one last chance at redemption.”

Chau will play his best friend while Deadline also notes Samantha Morton (The Walking Dead) and Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) are currently in talks to join the film as well. If negotiations go through, Sink will play the writer’s estranged daughter.

The MacArthur winning playwright Samuel D. Hunter will adapt the film based on the acclaimed 2012 play of the same name, which The Chicago Tribune described as a “devastating play about a man too big to move through life.”

“Adapting my play into a screenplay has been a real labor of love for me,” said Hunter. “This story is deeply personal, and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.”

The Whale will be produced by Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures and A24 with the latter having worldwide rights for distribution.
