Kelly Marie Tran says she doesn’t know if she could play Star Wars’ Rose Tico again

March 9, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

To celebrate International Women’s Day, IGN paired up voice actor Cissy Jones with Raya and the Last Dragon star Kelly Marie Tran to discuss their respective careers, and one of the biggest takeaways to come from the chat was the fact that despite saying she would consider a return to the Star Wars universe for a Disney+ series as recently as December last year, and appearing in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, it now seems that the actor has moved on from the role.

After deleting her social media accounts in the wake of the negative reaction to her character in The Last Jedi, largely from basement dwelling keyboard warriors, she was then reduced to little over a minute of screen time in much-maligned trilogy-capper The Rise of Skywalker.

That hasn’t stopped her continuing to have an affinity with her Star Wars alter-ego, admitting that “I miss Rose”. She continued (at 16:00 in the IGN video) adding “I maybe miss who I was when I played her. I feel like, sometimes, I don’t know that I could play her now. I feel like I’m different.”

“I think so many times in our lifetimes, we are constantly growing and learning and, again, the realm of human experience is so limitless, you can be so many different people at one time, but when I think about Rose specifically I think about who I was then and how I was able to tap into certain parts of myself, I don’t know if I could play her again. I miss parts of her.”

As Jones, who has done voice work in everything from The Walking Dead videogames to GTA, remarked that she liked Rose because she hadn’t become jaded, Tran enthusiastically exclaimed “that’s the part of her that I miss”.
