Mickey Rourke slams the Marvel Cinematic Universe for lacking “real acting”

May 13, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Never one to hold his words, Mickey Rourke has hit the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a low blow. In a recent Instagram post, the actor went on a rant focusing around watching the show Law & Order for the first time.

How do Marvel Studios play into this? The one-time Iron Man 2 actor says the police procedural drama has “real acting,” unlike the massively popular superhero films.

To cap off a long rant about binging the series Law & Order, Rourke closed with quite the stinger. “Respect to all of you, the work that you all do is real acting, not like that crap that all on Marvel shit,” Rourke wrote.

It seems like the Academy Award-nominated actor is unhappy with the state of Marvel movies, though it’s no surprise after his much-maligned appearance in 2010’s Iron Man 2. Known for films like Rumble Fish, Sin City, and The Wrestler, Rourke starred as the villainous Whiplash in the second Iron Man movie. The performance was met with much flack from audiences at the time, and Rourke hasn’t held his feelings back about Marvel since then.

In an interview years ago, the actor stated: “So, if you’re working with some good studio guys that got brains and you’re working with a director with a set of nuts that’ll let you incorporate that, then it’s fun. Otherwise, you end up with what happened on Iron Man.”

So, while the placement of a Marvel jab in a post about Law & Order seems strange, this news isn’t shocking to anyone familiar with Rourke and his feelings on Iron Man.
