June 3, 2021 by Ricky Church

HBO Films’ The Days of Abandonment has cast Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) to star opposite Natalie Portman in Maggie Betts’ adaptation of the Elena Ferrante novel.

Parker will play the Mysterious Woman, “a mesmerizing but elusive woman that Portman’s Tess starts encountering everywhere she goes, which causes Tess to question her sanity.”

The Days of Abandonment is “a visceral, no-holds-barred journey into the mind of a woman in crisis that confronts the norms of motherhood and female identity as Tess (Portman) traverses the darkest reaches of her own psyche. The film will follows the story of Tess, a woman who abandoned her own dreams for a stable home life. Her world gets suddenly thrown off its axis when her husband abandons her.”

Maggie Betts (Novitiate) will write, direct and executive produce the film. Maven Screen Media will produce the film alongside Portman’s MountainA Films.
