Eternals director Chloe Zhao teases the Celestials and post-credits sequences

October 20, 2021 by EJ Moreno

To no one’s surprise, Eternals will follow the Marvel tradition of post-credit scenes to entice audiences for what’s to come, and director Chloe Zhao wants to make sure you see them.

During an interview with Fandango, Zhao notes that the end credit sequences (which we won’t spoil here) will not only be critical to the overall story but are packed with a few surprises for fans as well. “Don’t just stay for the first one – also stay for the second one, too,” says Zhao. “They are equally as important in weight, and both have big surprises for you.”

The Academy Award-winning director also spoke about the future of Marvel and how Eternals will set up some essential things while also re-introducing one of the craziest parts of Marvel’s cosmo drama. Though we’ve seen them in passing once or twice, Zhao’s film is about to focus heavily on the Celestials.

“I think a big part of it is that audiences will be discovering the origin of the MCU through the mythology of the Celestials. I think by the end of the film, we will have a new understanding of planet Earth’s relationship with the cosmos, and also with her own inhabitants.” She continues, “But in that sense, it would have a huge effect on the future of the MCU.”

Even Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has noted how important the film is to the future of Marvel, stating in a previous interview that the film will “be nothing less than redefining the cinematic universe entirely.” Something big is coming to the MCU in November.

“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”

Eternals is directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider) and features a cast that includes Angelina Jolie (Maleficent) as Thena, Richard Madden (Bodyguard) as Ikaris, Don Lee (Train to Busan) as Gilgamesh, Salma Hayek (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) as Ajak, Lauren Ridloff (The Walking Dead) as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry (Child’s Play) as Phastos, Lia McHugh (American Woman) as Sprite, Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) as Kingo, Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as Dane Whitman, Gemma Chan (Captain Marvel) as Sersi and Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) as Druig.

Marvel’s Eternals is set for release on November 5th.
