Jake Gyllenhaal in talks for Road House remake with director Doug Liman

November 14, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Jake Gyllenhaal has a decent track record when it comes to picking his projects, but he may have his work cut out winning over some fans with this one…

As revealed by Variety, Gyllenhaal is in talks with MGM to take on the lead role in Road House, a remake of the 1989 cult classic starring Patrick Swayze, with Edge of Tomorrow and Chaos Walking helmer Doug Liman also in negotiations.

As yet, deals are yet to be signed, and Variety’s report stresses that “it remains unclear whether Gyllenhaal will take on the role of Dalton in the  remake or if the film will function as a different type of interpretation of the 1989 original.”

Road House saw Patrick Swayze leading its cast as James Dalton, a bouncer brought in to clean up the Double Deuce, a sleazy nightclub in small town Missouri, and finds himself at odds with a corrupt local businessman. It debuted to mixed reviews and numerous Razzie Award nominations, but has since become a cult favourite.

This isn’t the first time there’s been talk of a Road House remake, as former UFC and WWE star Ronda Rousey was attached to star in a version from director Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook) back in 2015. However, the project failed to materialise.
