First reactions to The Matrix Resurrections are mixed, but unanimous in their praise for Neo & Trinity

December 17, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

The Matrix Resurrections is finally uploaded onto cinema screens next week, and if you follow the white rabbit by searching #TheMatrixResurrections on social media then the first reactions are beginning to appear. Some call it “a gorgeous, dynamic film that’s rough in patches”, while others say it “brilliantly reinvents the franchise”, but all seem to focus in on the chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as the films strongest element and that “its central love story is where it shines”. You can check out a spoiler free selection below…

Keanu Reeves gives one of his best performances in THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS. Him and Carrie-Anne Moss still have that magic chemistry, carrying a gorgeous, dynamic film that’s rough in patches yet still discovers great additions in Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jessica Henwick. pic.twitter.com/oIRfGcel30

#TheMatrix Resurrections in Lana Wachowki’s LEGO MOVIE and her FORCE AWAKENS and her LAST JEDI and her THE SOUVENIR PART II, all at once. In the end, it’s a love story. A lot of people are gonna *hate* it.

I can’t stop thinking about The Matrix Resurrections.

It brilliantly reinvents the franchise while increasing the importance of the first 3 films all while being touching, exciting and gorgeous. It’s very trippy and complex, but I loved it. Can’t wait to see it again and again. pic.twitter.com/SsPhli7KWy

THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS deconstructs the original trilogy with an ambitious, often messy, meta narrative while providing closure & a new beginning for Neo & Trinity. The villains & score are awesome! For all of its faults this overstuffed epilogue will invite a lot of discussion pic.twitter.com/7ffpJnfFI9

#TheMatrix Resurrections is one of the most thought-provoking blockbusters ever made since it grapples with real-world legacy. It has all the elements you want in a Matrix film, but its central love story is where it shines. I also hope WB considers a Jessica Henwick-led spinoff. pic.twitter.com/nDZ0HWYRgL

THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS is very flawed. Long, plodding, and exposition driven. But it’s also directed/acted with so much sincerity and eagerness to do something new. It takes all the swings a Matrix sequel should make. It’s MANY things, but “safe” is NOT one of them. #TheMatrix pic.twitter.com/pUcxbCkUed

Do these early reactions make you even more excited to plug back into The Matrix, or are you happy to eat your steak and get on with the rest of your life oblivious to it? Let us know what you think by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Twenty years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. The Matrix remains in the zeitgeist as a film that has changed the way we look at cinema and reality itself. With its game-changing action and visual effects, The Matrix helped pave the way for films to follow.”
