Simon Kinberg gives update on Battlestar Galactica film and confirms “shared universe” with TV reboot

January 9, 2022 by Ricky Church

The road to the new Battlestar Galactica film has been a long one after several years of development and after a year without updates for the film or the planned Peacock TV reboot from Mr. Robot‘s Sam Esmail, writer and producer Simon Kinberg has given an update on both projects.

Kinberg was attached to write and produce the Battlestar Galactica film alongside Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) in 2020, but very little information has been given about the status of the project since. Now in an interview with Collider, Kinberg has revealed they are searching for directors with an eye to begin production late 2022/early 2023.

“We are in the process of going out to directors and the hope is to attach a director and start prepping the movie this year,” Kinberg told Collider. “It’s a megillah, humongous film and the prep will be a very long prep period so I would imagine even if we attached a director today it would take six, nine months to prep this movie properly. So at the earliest, we’d be shooting at the end of this year. We’d probably be shooting at the beginning of next year. Time will tell who the director is and then you or someone else will tell who the director is.”

What has made the Battlestar Galactica film even more interesting is the fact Peacock is developing another TV reboot concurrently. It was unknown if the new film and series would be connected or have their own canons, but Kinberg revealed he has been working closely with Esmail to create a “shared universe” between the two projects.

“In terms of the situation with Sam and the show, I can’t say too much about it other than there is synergy between the two enterprises and constant communication between us. We’ve become close and been having a really good time together and there will be, for lack of a better phrase and it’s an overused phrase, a shared universe.”

The previous Battlestar Galactica reboot premiered with a miniseries in 2003 and the series proper in 2004, running for four seasons until 2009 and led by Ronald D. Moore. It has often been named as one of the best sci-fi TV series ever made. Kinberg teased his and Esmail’s reboot may connect in some way to the reimagined series as he said “There are connections, but it is certainly not simply a continuation or a remake of Ron Moore’s masterpiece.”

Are you more curious about the film and series now that they will exist in a shared universe? How will it connect to Moore’s Battlestar Galactica and might we see stars from that series appear in some way? Let us know your thoughts on our social channels at @flickeringmyth…
