FX chief says Noah Hawley’s Alien series “takes place before Ripley”

February 18, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

It seems like we’ll have to wait longer than Ripley was cryogenically frozen between films until we get to see Noah Hawley’s small-screen Alien series, so we’ll just have to make do with exciting soundbites, like those dropped by FX chief John Landgraf at the Television Critics Association press tour, where he said that the series “takes place before Ripley” and that “there are some big surprises in store”.

Hawley, the creator of Fargo and Legion for FX, had already revealed that the process was “going great” but “slowly”, but at least we’re getting a clearer idea of where he’s steering the series with what Landgraf had to say:

“Alien takes place before Ripley. It’s the first story in the Alien franchise that takes place on Earth. It takes place on our planet, near the end of this century we’re currently in – 70 odd years from now. All I can tell you is Ripley won’t be a part of it, and neither will any other characters – other than the alien itself. There are some big surprises in store for the audience.”

Aliens on Earth was threatened at the end of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s much-maligned fourth entry into the franchise, Alien Resurrection, but when that underperformed critically and commercially, it appeared to be the end of that idea, until now. Landgraf added:

“I hope they will feel like it’s faithful to the franchise they love but also a brave and original reinvention of that franchise. Setting it on Earth is really interesting. We have to think forward about the future of the planet in terms of the environment, governance, technology and create and design a version of the planet in the future … Noah wants to do that in a distinctive and original way.”
