Judd Apatow hoping to move forward with This Is 50

March 26, 2022 by Gary Collinson

It seems that Judd Apatow is looking to get the ball rolling on a sequel to his 2012 comedy This Is 40, with the filmmaker telling The Wrap that he’s been working on a story to reunite Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann for This Is 50.

“I couldn’t have done it five years ago and I can’t do it five years from now, so I’ve been outlining that and hope it’s something that we get to do,” said Apatow. “I feel like [This Is 40] has really aged well, and it always feels like everyone watches it when they turn 40 and they go, ‘Oh, I understand it all now’ [laughs]. So I’m enthusiastic about putting that together.”

A spinoff from Knocked Up, This Is 40 saw Rudd and Mann starring as Pete and Debbie, a married couple whose stressful relationship is compounded by them both turning 40. Despite a mixed reception, the film was a modest success at the box office, grossing $88 million.

Apatow is currently out on the promotional trail for his new film The Bubble, which follows a group of actors embarking on production of the latest instalment in a dinosaur-themed blockbuster franchise during the COVID-19 pandemic. Watch the trailer here.
